About the Groom Speech

Groom Speech

You are one of the two most important people, and all eyes will be on you. You need to deliver a light hearted and entertaining speech, sincerely thanking all those who have made the wedding possible.

You have about five minutes to thank everyone, make a good impression, and leave people smiling.

You speak second, after the father of the bride, who may have made a fascinating speech that has people thinking. Alternatively his speech may not have been so entertaining, and people are talking among themselves. You have about thirty seconds to refocus everyone's attention on what you have to say. Use those seconds wisely, or your speech will fall flat before it is properly underway.

Some pointers:

It's often considered a little vulgar to thank the people paying for the celebrations for the money they have spent. However, it is important to make clear that you appreciate their generosity.

You have a lot of people to thank. However, avoid having your speech be a list of thank yous. One way is to break up the list of thanks with humour or reminiscences. This is particularly effective if it relates to the person who has just been thanked, or is about to be thanked.

Try to link sections of the speech so that it flows when spoken.

For you alone the wedding speech is NOT the most important part of the day. Plan ahead so that you are ready with stunning performances for your vows and at the reception!

Wedding day preparations can take most of your time. Plan to allow sufficient time to prepare your speech, rather than fitting it in odd moments between other preparations.
